Barnes Fletcher Lathrop was born on Marhc 29, 1909 in Morgan City, Louisiana. He earned degrees from the Rice Institute (Bachelor of Arts, 1930), the University of Chicago (Master of Arts, 1931), and The University of Texas (Ph.D., 1945). In 1935 Lathrop accepted a teaching fellowship at The University of Texas at Austin, where he worked under Charles W. Ramsdell, a leading historian of the Confederacy.
